Video Games Weekly: It's weird that esports is segregated by gender

  • Welcome to Video Games Weekly on Engadget. Expect a new story every Monday or Tuesday (Or, I dunno, Thursday), broken into two parts. The first is a space for short essays and ramblings about video game trends and related topics from me, Jess Conditt, a reporter who's covered the industry for more than 13 years. The second contains the video game stories from the past week that you need to know about, including some headlines from outside of Engadget. Please enjoy — and I'll see you next week.Earlier this week, FlyQuest top laner Bwipo (Gabrie?l Rau) was suspended for one series of the League of Legends LTA playoffs after saying some wild stuff during a livestream about women and their ability to play esports. Here’s a sampling of what he said:“I think there's just not enough support for female pro players... women's anatomy and their monthly cycles are just extremely different from males, and there's no proper support system for women to go through what they're going through.”“Even men just tilt out of their fucking minds when they're playing League of Legends. So, when a woman is on the wrong part of the month and playing competitively, there is a time of the month where you should not be fucking playing competitive games as a woman, in my opinion.”OK, Bwipo. His comments received an appropriate amount of ridicule from fellow players, casters and fans, and FlyQuest benched him during a pivotal moment in the race to Worlds. He has apologized and pledged to "reflect, listen, and do better."So, here we are yet again. It’s 2025 and it must be stated: Men are not biologically better at video games than women. Women, femmes and nonbinary people are not physiologically less interested in or skilled at competitive gaming than a player who lives as a dude. Gender on its own has no bearing on how quickly a person can click a mouse, scan a screen or strategize in high-intensity situations, and lines of code react the same no matter how an individual player identifies. That said, I find myself agreeing with Bwipo’s initial statement, “There's just not enough support for female pro players.” I understand, in a backward kind of way, the logical leaps he then tried to make in order to explain a situation that doesn’t make any sense — namely, the absence of non-guy players in mainstream, professional esports. His conclusion may have been laughably misguided, but the core conundrum still stands. The professional esports scene is segregated by gender and dominated by men. There are no hard and fast rules barring women or gender nonconforming people from competing at a professional level in any major league, but there are vanishingly few women, femmes or non-male-presenting players participating in mainstream esports tournaments, and this tends to be the baseline. There are separate leagues and competitions established specifically for women and gender nonconforming players, and while I find these events to be extremely exciting, they’re siloed and receive far less financial, marketing and back-end support than mainstream tournaments. Women’s esports leagues exist in a bubble that, for some strange reason, seems to be modeled on the gender segregation practices of traditional sports, with matching gaps in pay, respect and opportunity.A handful of women players have broken through on the main stage over the years, including Potter (Christine Chi, CS:GO), Karma (Jaime Bickford, Rocket League), Hafu (Rumay Wang, WoW, Hearthstone) and Scarlett (Sasha Hostyn, StarCraft II). Still, the earnings gap between men and women in esports is cavernous: According to Esports Earnings, the top male player on record is N0tail (Johan Sundstein, Dota 2), with $7,184,163 in prize money to his name. The top female player on that list is Scarlett, with $472,111 in total earnings. There are 619 male players ahead of her, and the totals don't factor in the lucrative sponsorship deals available to elite gamers.I have to say it again. Esports, an industry built around people playing video games really well, is segregated by gender. Isn’t that insane? The natural question is, why? It’s not because only men are good at video games, since we’ve established that’s a steaming pile of horseshit. Nor is it because, as Bwipo suggested, some women menstruate. But the actual reason is just as clear. It’s sexism. The gender makeup of the mainstream esports scene is the result of everyday, bog standard, garden variety, run of the mill misogyny. In the world of esports, it’s sponsored by Red Bull, drenched in LEDs and proudly hosted by your favorite streamer. At our current stage, when a veteran LoL player is openly trying to bring back the hysteria diagnosis rather than looking at the realities of a system that provides him privilege, I think we have to say it plainly. Put the pivotal issue on the table so we can look at how ugly, regressive and nasty it is. Only then can we start to change it.There is a dearth of women, femmes and nonbinary people in mainstream esports because of the sexism that permeates society at large.I understand why someone like Bwipo — or other players, coaches, presenters, managers, team owners, league organizers or game makers at the highest levels of esports — wouldn’t want to acknowledge this fact or how much power it holds over the entire scene. I get that some would rather twist themselves into knots trying to blame women for their own exclusion, instead of tackling an uncomfortable social issue that runs far deeper than just the gaming industry. I understand it, but I think it’s cowardly. Ostrich behavior. So, let’s look at it. If misogyny in esports is the problem, I think a solution has to lie in the talent pipeline. During the scouting stages, when school-age players of all genders are streaming and climbing ranks from their bedrooms, boys naturally receive things from the community that girls don’t, like enthusiastic support, a welcoming attitude, respect, and, eventually, enough belief in their skills to risk investment. I’m not suggesting toxicity isn’t a thing for everyone, but these positive aspects are also built into the experience for many young men playing games. Young women have to earn these responses, generally by overperforming compared to their peers, and while being belittled, sexualized, threatened with violence, hyperanalyzed and othered, for years on end. It’s exhausting. It silently pushes some women out of video games and esports. It’s also malleable. Sexism spawns from an embarrassing and irrational way of thinking, but people change their minds all the time. A simple but widespread shift in perception — oh right, it's weird that esports is segregated by gender — can make an enormous impact especially on these early stages of esports play. How we think alters how we behave, how we speak and what we allow in social spaces. It really can be that simple, at least as a starting point.I think about this each time I turn on a pro match, which is currently every day with LoL Worlds qualification tournaments in full swing (hi, FlyQuest). The esports gender disparity is face-smackingly obvious, especially in concert with the godlike presentation that existing players tend to receive: hype trailers with uber-masculine motifs, walk-out rituals, emotional behind-the-scenes documentaries and epic promotional spots depicting teams as otherwordly superheroes. Of course, most esports players are literal teenagers, which tends to make these macho presentations more adorable than anything — but the fact remains that male esports pros, even teenage ones, are taken extremely seriously as athletes (athletes!) and can find support for their goals at every level. I’d love to see this encouragement, faith and excitement extended to young women and nonbinary players as well. The mental shift is the first step. As demonstrated by Bwipo’s offhand comments, it seems plenty of people in the esports scene are still in the early stages of critical thinking when it comes to gender and opportunity, so we’re starting with the basics. Remind yourself that men are not inherently skilled at playing video games and women aren’t naturally bad, and think about how ridiculous those suggestions sound in the first place. Remember that sexism is an artificial barrier limiting opportunities for everyone in esports. Next time you see an ad with a bunch of dude esports players surrounded by ladies in cosplay, take a second to notice how odd that is. Hear how many times the casters say “gentlemen,” “sir,” “boys” and other gendered terms during games, and recognize how daunting this space is for players who don’t fit those descriptions. Get comfortable with the idea that some humans can play video games really, really, really well, and this fact is completely divorced from how they look or identify. It’s easy to do because it’s true.Additional reading and viewingVeteran LoL caster Sjokz on the idiocy of BwipoAre Trans People too Visible? Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe (Eric Barone) announced another numbered update is on its way, adding significant bits of new content to the game more than nine years after its Steam debut. Update 1.7 will hit Stardew Valley at an unspecified time in the near future and Barone clarified that it won’t impact the release timeline for his next game, Haunted Chocolatier. Barone had the following to say about the whole thing:“Haunted Chocolatier will be released at some point. And sure, the reality of my life is that I have a very popular 1st game that I still want to take care of, which means that my 2nd game might take a little longer. It is what it is. I didn’t have to make a 1.7 update for Stardew Valley, but the game is still so popular (in fact, still growing), that it’s hard to just stop improving it when there are still things that can be improved. But I hope the approach I am taking for Stardew Valley 1.7 will help keep Haunted Chocolatier on track.“About the Stardew Valley team: they are awesome, all very talented, hard-working, and contribute unique things to the development process. We are a very small group, and I like it that way. Also, I am still working completely solo on Haunted Chocolatier without any plans to change that for the time being.”Yooka-Replaylee will be here in OctoberPlaytonic’s bright and shiny remaster of Yooka-Laylee will come to PS5, PC, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on October 9. For the Switch 2 version, Playtonic has opted to release the full game on an actual cartridge, rather than relying on game-key card downloads, which is a heartwarming throwback to the way things were. Digital versions of the game cost $30, while the physical edition is $50.Diablo developers vote to unionizeMore than 450 developers with Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo team have voted to form a union with the backing of the Communications Workers of America. The CWA is also overseeing the ZeniMax QA union, and is backing recent organization efforts by the Overwatch 2 crew and Blizzard’s Story and Franchise Development group. (Am I the only person who wants that to be Story and Song development? Probably.) The CWA says more than 3,500 Microsoft employees have organized under its banner.Diablo producer Kelly Yeo is an organizing committee member of the latest Blizzard union and she said in a statement that multiple rounds of sweeping layoffs at Microsoft prompted the organization efforts."With every subsequent round of mass layoffs, I've witnessed the dread in my coworkers grow stronger because it feels like no amount of hard work is enough to protect us," Yeo said. "This is just the first step for us joining a movement spreading across an industry that is tired of living in fear."Layoffs at Crystal Dynamics and FiraxisIt feels like nowadays, for every unionization story, there are at least two tales of layoffs. This was sadly true in recent weeks, with news of mass firings at Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics and Civilization team Firaxis. An unknown number of people were fired from Crystal Dynamics and it’s unclear if the cuts were tied to the recent cancellation of The Initiative, which Crystal Dynamics was helping reboot. The Initiative was canceled as part of Microsoft’s huge cuts to its gaming segment in July (which followed similarly large losses the year before, and so on). Crystal Dynamics is still owned by Embracer Group and is working on a new Tomb Raider installment. After unleashing Civilization VII on the masses in February, Firaxis has also laid off an undisclosed number of developers in the name of studio restructuring. Firaxis is owned by 2K, which recently canceled a remake of the original BioShock and sent Cloud Chamber’s new BioShock title back to an even-deeper circle of development hell. Meanwhile, Take-Two Interactive, the company that controls all of this, is reporting healthy financials and expectations to grow in the second half of 2025. Grand Theft Auto VI is on its way, after all.Ju-DAS, Ju-da’as / Ju-DAS, Ju-da’asI swear, if the release trailer for Ghost Story Games’ Judas doesn’t include the Lady Gaga song, I will riot by myself.Following all of that weird BioShock news out of 2K, Ken Levine decided to remind everyone that his game Judas is still in development and even has key art. His post on the PlayStation Blog outlines some of the relationship mechanics in Judas, relating them partly to the Nemesis system from Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, which has me all kinds of excited. And, yeah, the new picture looks cool, too.Ghost Story GamesThe Silksong cornerThe day of its release, Hollow Knight: Silksong singlehandedly crashed multiple game storefronts including Steam, the Nintendo eShop and the Xbox Store. The marketplaces recovered, but players haven’t — the bulk of the post-launch discourse has focused on whether the game is too hard, a suggestion that I find baffling as someone who does not enjoy punishing metroidvanias like Silksong. With this brand of game, I was under the impression that if it’s beatable, it’s not too hard. It’s mechanically precise, tricky, twitchy and super-duper challenging — isn’t that exactly what you masochists want? Then again, Team Cherry’s first update for the game includes a “slight difficulty reduction in early game bosses” including Moorwing and Sister Splinter, so what do I know? There’s a Nintendo Direct on FridayWatch it here at 9AM ET.Catch the end of the Flame Fatales speedrunning eventThe Flame Fatales speedrunning event, which features women and femmes playing a bunch of awesome games very quickly, is underway and runs through Sunday, September 14. Metal Logic launches modular, scalable low emission smelting platform, with a site secured for first deployment in the Pilbara region

  • Steel is about to become cheaper and cleaner MELBOURNE, Australia, Sept. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Low-emission steel platform Metal Logic has secured a strategic location in Western Australia's iron ore–rich Pilbara region to deploy its 'smelting as a service' model. The company will utilize its Australian-invented, modular and scalable array smelting technology at industrial scale with an initial array deployment of 1Mtpa then ramping up mass production from Melbourne. The technology, invented and developed for commercialisation in Australia, enables the processing of lower-grade ores, extends mine life, and offers a cost advantage to local manufacturers—ushering in a new era of jobs and regional resilience. Chief Executive Joel Nicholls confirmed that Metal Logic has secured land from a private entity within 20 kilometres of the key rail lines that transport more than half of the Pilbara's iron ore to the coast for export. "Metal Logic intends to deploy its modular, scalable array smelter at this location, delivering our 'clean steel' solution to the market," Mr. Nicholls stated. "Our platform allows treatment of lower-grade iron ore, enabling operations to continue below previous cut-off grades and unlocking previously stranded or care-and-maintenance deposits," he explained. "We are expanding our team and seeking people with the skills needed for our next deployment phase. Metal Logic is already evaluating stranded and care-and-maintenance iron ore resources to determine their suitability for our process. We need experts, from resource assessors to engineers, to help us scale our solution." Focusing on thermodynamic efficiency to minimize costs and lower emissions, Metal Logic's technology is economically viable without requiring government subsidies. "We aim to unlock previously stranded mineral resources and deliver value-added processing to regions, allowing taxpayer funds to be directed to other priorities such as education, health, and manufacturing," said Mr Nicholls. Mr. Nicholls added that Metal Logic has received strong backing from global steel and iron ore industry leaders, further validating the strategic importance of its new Pilbara site, located close to major rail and Port Hedland. Unlocking a New Era in Steel and Resource Value Chains For more than a century, steel production has relied on furnaces that waste up to half their input energy. Even modern blast furnaces and their "green" alternatives operate at only 25–65% of the thermodynamic ceiling of approximately 7.5 gigajoules per tonne of iron[1]. As a result, entrenched reliance on coal, coke, and outdated furnaces generates over 2.8 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions annually[2], while keeping steel prices high and locked into inefficient chemistry. Metal Logic's approach aims to reset the steel value chain by supporting two types of customers: Resource owners with stranded assets: The technology makes lower-grade ores economically feasible, extends mine life, and reduces environmental impact by processing deposits that would otherwise remain untapped. Locating smelters near these resources also minimizes shipping inefficiencies and keeps value creation local, potentially adding up to $400 USD in value per tonne of ore retained in Australia—creating jobs and new industries. Steel buyers seeking traceability: Metal Logic offers steel with traceability and verifiable CO2 footprints. Advanced electrochemical, photonic, and molecular-scale separation methods allow efficiency beyond traditional methods, reducing the need for bulk shipping of ore and waste. The Purpose: Australia has long exported raw ore and repurchased high-value manufactured goods. Metal Logic's platform aims to "industrialize" resource-rich regions, extend mine life, reduce environmental footprints, and supply downstream industries with lower-cost, traceable steel. For miners, it unlocks marginal resources; for manufacturers and nations, it delivers affordable, cleaner steel at scale. For communities, it means jobs and resilience—not the loss seen with past industry closures. By bringing miners and steel buyers together on a single platform, the company hopes to deliver environmental and economic benefits for all stakeholders. About Metal Logic Metal Logic operates research, development, laboratory, smelter development, and production facilities in Victoria, with offices in Perth and Melbourne. With its newly secured site near Port Hedland in the Pilbara, the company is advancing the commercialization of modular, scalable clean steel smelting technology that aims to provide steel at a lower cost than traditional black carbon methods. www.metallogic.com [1] IEA (2012), CO2 abatement in the iron and steel industry, CCC/193 ISBN 978-92-9029-513-6, IEA Clean Coal Centre [2] IEA (2023), Emissions Measurement and Data Collection for a Net Zero Steel Industry, IEA, Paris https://www.iea.org/reports/emissions-measurement-and-data-collection-for-a-net-zero-steel-industry, Licence: CC BY 4.0

As Apple pursues AI, spare a thought for the poor HomePod

As Apple pursues AI, spare a thought for the poor HomePod

  • When the video kicking off Apple's "Awe dropping" event began yesterday, I was pleased to see a HomePod in the opening shot. I hadn't given any thought to Apple's beleaguered smart home speaker in ages, so I was all set for Tim Cook and crew to deliver an actual surprise and reveal new stuff for HomePod. When the entire presentation then passed without another peep about the product, I was disappointed, but resigned.HomePod has always been behind the curve. When smart speakers first came on the scene, the sector was quickly dominated by Amazon and Google, with Sonos as the boutique third-party option. Apple announced the HomePod in June 2017, almost three years after Amazon unveiled its original Echo speaker. The HomePod arrived too slow and cost too much, and (in an echo of the company's current woes) Siri was too unhelpful, for the smart speaker to really claw back much market share from its rivals. The Mini iteration came out in late 2020, and the second-generation HomePod in February 2023 added support for Thread smart home standard. Not exactly pushing the boundaries of smart speaker innovation. And things got worse for the poor HomePod as voice-controlled AI assistants have transitioned away from being centered around dedicated speakers. AI is now being integrated ever-more tightly into our smartphones and computers, with less need for a separate intermediary device. Which brings us to the ongoing issue of Apple's shaky foothold in the AI race.Apple has been promising a big overhaul to Siri for awhile, with the new and improved version currently not due until spring 2026. To show off that new AI assistant, Apple is reportedly working on an interactive smart home hub that is expected to have HomePod-like audio capabilities baked in, but won't be ready for launch until at least 2027. What's a company to do in the interim? It makes sense for Apple to hold back on any big developments to its existing Siri-centric smart home speaker. I get it. But I could have been hyped to see a stripped down HomePod that focused more on being a speaker than on being smart. I have a Sonos that I love, and part of me assumed that I would eventually upgrade to an Apple offering. The AirPods are such a great element in the Apple ecosystem, and I use mine almost daily. Having a powerful, high-quality home speaker that delivers the easy interconnectivity that's such a big part of Apple's value proposition might have helped bridge the time gap, keeping Apple in people's minds as a player in home tech while the company works on its next, more innovative move. Take one step back to take three steps forward. In practice, though, it feels like the window for the HomePod to become a star in Apple's lineup has shrunk to almost nothing. As I now look at the recent trends in AI and home tech, I don't see an obvious space for a smart speaker. That's not limited to Apple; it's also pretty telling that both Amazon and Google haven't been giving much love to their smart speakers either. In fact, a majority of Engadget's favorite smart speakers this year are from specialist Sonos as the big tech names have put their focus on AI instead of audio. We'll still have smart speakers, but they'll be folded into multi-purpose gadgets and pitched as general smart-home aids. To be clear, there's been no indication that Apple will sunset the HomePod. But my personal prediction is that HomePod will stay on the sidelines for now and get pushed even farther away from the spotlight when the new smart home products are unveiled, receiving only occasional attention until Apple officially and quietly pulls the plug for good. And so will end the life of a star-crossed product that never got the chance to shine at its full potential. Here's hoping I'm wrong. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/home/smart-home/as-apple-pursues-ai-spare-a-thought-for-the-poor-homepod-223250670.html?src=rss

Burger King UK taps Gordon Ramsay, only to say he didn’t make the burger

  • Burger King UK has rolled out a cheeky new campaign featuring celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay only to stress that its new £11 Wagyu beef burger is not made by him. The limited-time burger, available across the UK from September 9, features British Wagyu beef, caramelised onion mayo, rocket, and onions served three ways. The tagline, “Not Made by Gordon”, leans into Ramsay’s fiery, larger-than-life persona while giving Burger King bragging rights for sourcing wagyu closer to home.Traditionally associated with Japan, wagyu beef has slowly been making its way into the UK food landscape through cross-breeding with British dairy cattle. The campaign positions Burger King as a champion of British farms while borrowing Ramsay’s culinary credibility without turning him into the chef behind the counter. The creative push, executed by BBH’s in-house arm Black Sheep Studios, plays out across TV, digital, and OOH. The films comically show Ramsay angling to be part of the burger’s creation, only to be kept on the sidelines. The OOH creatives put the burger front and centre, with Ramsay peeking in from the sidelines — a playful nod to what could have been. While the campaign is UK-specific, it’s an interesting move for Burger King, which operates nearly 600 outlets in Britain and around 400 in India. For Indian audiences, Ramsay’s association is bound to spark curiosity, especially since the chef recently opened his first Street Burger outlet in India at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3.The contrast is stark: Ramsay’s fine-dining ethos sits worlds apart from Burger King’s flame-grilled fast-food approach, yet the collaboration works because it taps into Ramsay’s pop-culture currency rather than his kitchen skills. In a food landscape increasingly driven by storytelling, Burger King UK’s move feels like a wink to both loyalists and meme culture — reminding us that sometimes, the best way to sell a burger is by making sure the world knows who didn’t cook it.

SK hynix Begins Supplying Mobile NAND Solution ZUFS 4.1

  • Company achieves world-first mass production of high-performance NAND solution products and starts supplying them to the mobile market The solution significantly improves sustained performance compared to conventional UFS, reducing app launch time by 45%; optimized for on-device AI and large-scale data processing Company aims to strengthen its competitive edge in the AI memory sector through tailored solutions and strategic partnerships SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- SK hynix Inc. (or "the company", www.skhynix.com) announced today that it has begun supplying its high-performance mobile NAND solution ZUFS 4.1 to customers, marking the world's first mass production of this solution. The solution's adoption in the latest smartphones reinforces SK hynix's technological excellence in the global market. ZUFS 4.1 will enhance smartphones' powerful on-device AI capabilities, offering users an innovative experience. SK hynix successfully completed the qualification process for the solution in June this year through close collaboration with customers. In July, the company began mass production and started supplying the product. ZUFS, or Zoned UFS[1], is an extended specification of UFS[2] that applies Zoned Storage technology, which stores data in different zones based on its usage and characteristics. [1] Zoned UFS (ZUFS): First introduced by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) in 2023 as an extended specification of UFS. Development of ZUFS 4.1, based on the JEDEC UFS 4.1 standard, was completed in 2025. [2] Universal Flash Storage (UFS): A high-speed flash memory storage specification for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Since the launch of UFS 1.0 in 2011, the specification has evolved through versions 2.0 (2013), 2.1 (2016), 3.0 (2018), 3.1 (2020), 4.0 (2022), and 4.1 (2025), with each version significantly improving data transfer speed and power efficiency. When installed in a smartphone, ZUFS 4.1 enhances the operation speed of the operating system (OS) and improves data management efficiency. As a result, it mitigates read performance degradation over extended use by more than four times compared to conventional UFS, enabling a 45% reduction in app launch times. Unlike conventional UFS which writes new data by overwriting existing data, ZUFS 4.1 writes data sequentially. This data storage method has resulted in a 47% reduction in AI app launch times. These performance characteristics position ZUFS 4.1 as an optimal solution for today's mobile environment, where on-device AI and large-scale data processing are essential. In addition, SK hynix has significantly enhanced the error-handling capabilities of ZUFS 4.1 compared to version 4.0 developed in May 2024. By detecting errors with greater precision and clearly communicating the necessary corrective actions to the central processing unit, the latest solution is expected to significantly improve system reliability and recovery performance. "ZUFS 4.1, which we have successfully begun to supply, is the first solution developed and mass-produced through collaboration aimed at optimizing Android OS and storage devices. Looking ahead, its applications are expected to expand," said Justin Kim, President & Head of AI Infra at SK hynix. "We will continue to supply NAND solutions that meet customer needs in a timely manner, while strengthening partnerships with global companies to strengthen our competitive edge in the AI memory sector." About SK hynix Inc.SK hynix Inc., headquartered in Korea, is the world's top tier semiconductor supplier offering Dynamic Random Access Memory chips ("DRAM") and flash memory chips ("NAND flash") for a wide range of distinguished customers globally. The Company's shares are traded on the Korea Exchange, and the Global Depository shares are listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. The auto industry’s rare earth problem, and what comes next

  • After months of uncertainty, India’s automakers can breathe a sigh of relief. It all started in April this year, after China, the world’s largest maker of rare earth magnets—a key component in automotive manufacturing—decided to impose sanctions on their export, following the trade war with the US. While that remained the trigger, China also chose the opportunity to revisit exports to India, enforcing stricter sanctions on its neighbours with whom geopolitical tensions had been simmering. The decision meant that India’s automakers, the fourth largest in the world, were staring at a complete halt in production, particularly ahead of the festive season that accounts for about 40 percent of the annual sales. Now, as tensions between the Asian giants undergo a reset, the supply of rare earth magnets has also begun easing, giving a big reprieve to India’s automakers. China has 40 percent of the world’s deposits of rare earth minerals. As much as 68 percent of all rare earth processing is done in China. And the country accounts for 92 percent of the global supply of rare earth magnets.“What I can tell you is that we are willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with relevant countries and regions to jointly maintain the stability of the global industrial and supply chains,” Mao Ning, a spokesperson of China’s foreign ministry, said on August 19.“Production and shipments recommenced on August 20, marking a faster-than-anticipated return to full capacity,” Bajaj Auto, India’s third-largest two-wheeler maker, said in a statement. Bajaj, which is India’s largest electric two-wheeler maker, had been vocal about the supply halt since the crisis began. “Bajaj Auto has secured a sufficient supply of rare earth magnets and other key materials to ensure availability during the upcoming festive season,” it added.Magnets made from rare earth elements are far more powerful than conventionally made magnets and, therefore, are of critical importance in aerospace and electric vehicles. The most popular rare earth magnets are neodymium-iron-boron and samarium-cobalt. Magnets are used in components such as power steering motors and air conditioning systems. India’s automobile sector imported about 870 tonnes of rare earth magnets last year.China currently has the largest deposits of rare earth elements at 44 million tonnes. India has about 6.9 million tonnes. But it is in the mining and refining process that China invested heavily in the past, allowing it to refine as much as 90 percent of the global supply and giving it a stranglehold over the minerals.“In the medium-to-long term, significant investments in alternative motor technologies will be necessary for automakers to reduce their dependence on rare earth magnets,” says Harshvardhan Sharma, group head, automotive tech & innovation group at Nomura Research Institute. “Given the scale of the issue, this is unlikely to be a silver bullet in the short term but could help create a more balanced supply-demand situation in the future.”

The best SSDs in 2025

The best SSDs in 2025

  • A fast, reliable SSD can make a huge difference to how your computer feels day to day. From quicker boot times to near-instant file transfers, solid-state drives outpace traditional hard drives in almost every way. They’re also more durable, run silently and use less power, making them a smart upgrade for laptops, desktops and even gaming consoles. The tricky part is choosing the right one. Between SATA drives, blazing-fast NVMe models and newer PCIe Gen 5 options, there’s a lot to weigh up in terms of speed, capacity and price. To make things easier, we’ve picked the best SSDs across a range of needs and budgets so you can upgrade with confidence. Table of contents Best SSDs in 2025 How we test SSDs What to look for in a PC SSD What to look for in portable and USB flash drives A note on console storage SSD FAQs Best SSDs in 2025 How we test SSDs I’ve either tested or personally use daily every storage drive recommended on this list. Out of our top picks, I bought four with my own money after doing about a dozen hours of research. Separately, Engadget Senior Reporter Jeff Dunn has also tested a handful of our recommendations, including the Crucial X9 Pro listed above. What to look for in a PC SSD The most affordable way to add fast storage space to a computer is with a 2.5-inch SATA drive. It’s also one of the easiest if you don’t want to worry about compatibility since almost every computer made in the last two decades will include a motherboard with Serial ATA connections. For that reason, the best SATA SSDs are an excellent choice if you want to extend the life of an older PC build. Installation is straightforward, too. Once you’ve secured the internal SSD in a drive cage, all you need to do is to connect it to your motherboard and power supply. The one downside of SATA drives is that, in terms of responsiveness, they’re slower than their high-performance NVMe counterparts, with SATA III limiting data transfers to 600MB/s. But even the slowest SSD will be significantly faster than the best mechanical drives. And with high-capacity, 1TB SATA SSDs costing about $100, they’re a good bulk-storage option. If your PC is newer, there’s a good chance it includes space for one or more M.2 SSDs. The form factor represents your ticket to the fastest SSDs on the market, but the tricky part is navigating all the different standards and specs involved. M.2 drives can feature either a SATA or PCIe connection. SSDs with the latter are known as Non-Volatile Memory or NVMe drives and are significantly faster than their SATA counterparts, with Gen3 models offering sequential write speeds of up to 3,000MB/s. These drives rely on NVMe NAND technology for their superior performance and durability. You can get twice the performance with a Gen4 SSD, but you’ll need a motherboard and processor that supports the standard. If you’re running an AMD system, that means at least a Ryzen 3000 or 5000 CPU and an X570 or B550 motherboard. With Intel, meanwhile, you’ll need at least an 11th or 12th Gen processor and a Z490, Z590 or Z690 motherboard. Keep in mind that Gen4 SSDs typically cost more than their Gen3 counterparts as well. More expensive still are the latest Gen5 models, which offer sequential read speeds of up to 16,000MB/s. However, even if your computer supports the standard, you’re better off buying a more affordable Gen4 or Gen3 drive. At the moment, very few games and applications can take advantage of Gen3 NVMe speeds, let alone Gen4 and Gen5 speeds. What’s more, Gen5 NVMe drives can run hot, which can lead to performance and longevity issues. Your money is better spent on other components, like upgrading your GPU, for now. As for why you would buy an M.2 SATA drive over a similarly specced 2.5-inch drive, it comes down to ease of installation. You add M.2 storage to your computer by installing the SSD directly onto the motherboard. That may sound intimidating, but in practice the process involves a single screw that you first remove to connect the drive to your computer and then retighten to secure the SSD in place. As an added bonus, there aren’t any wires involved, making cable management easier. Note that you can install a SATA M.2 SSD into an M.2 slot with a PCIe connection, but you can’t insert an NVMe M.2 SSD into a M.2 slot with a SATA connection. Unless you want to continue using an old M.2 drive, there’s little reason to take advantage of that feature. Speaking of backward compatibility, it’s also possible to use a Gen4 drive through a PCIe 3 connection, but you won’t get any of the speed benefits of the faster NVMe. One last thing to consider is that M.2 drives come in different physical sizes. From shortest to longest, the common options are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. (The first two numbers represent width in millimeters and the latter denote the length.) For the most part, you don’t have to worry about that since 2280 is the default for many motherboards and manufacturers. Some boards can accommodate more than one size of NVMe SSD thanks to multiple standoffs. That said, check your computer’s documentation or firmware before buying a drive to ensure you’re picking up a compatible size. If you’re buying a replacement SSD for the Steam Deck or Steam Deck OLED, things are less complicated. For Valve’s handheld, you will need a 2230 size NVMe. Simple. If you don’t want to open your Steam Deck, it’s also possible to expand its storage by installing a microSD card. Engadget has a separate guide dedicated to SD card storage, so check that out for additional buying advice. I alluded to this earlier, but the best buying advice I can offer is don’t get too caught up about being on the bleeding edge of storage tech. The sequential read and write speeds you see manufacturers list on their drives are theoretical and real-world performance benchmark tests vary less than you think. If your budget forces you to choose between a 1TB Gen3 NVMe and a 512GB Gen4 model, go for the higher-capacity one. From a practical standpoint, the worst thing you can do is buy a type of SSD that’s too small for needs. Drives can slow dramatically as they approach capacity, and you will probably end up purchasing one with a higher gigabyte capacity in the future. What to look for in portable and USB flash drives Portable SSDs are a somewhat different beast to their internal siblings. While read and write speeds are important, they are almost secondary to how an external drive connects to your PC. You won’t get the most out of a model like the SanDisk Extreme Pro V2 without a USB 3.2 Gen 2 x 2 connection. Even among newer PCs, that’s something of a premium feature. For that reason, most people are best off buying a portable drive with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt connection. The former offers transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. The best external hard drives also allow you to transfer data from your Windows PC to a Mac, or other device, if compatible. Be sure to consider this beforehand if you plan to use your portable drive across multiple devices. Additionally, if you plan to take your drive on trips and commutes, it’s worthwhile to buy a model with IP-certified water and dust proofing. Some companies like Samsung offer rugged versions of their most popular drives, including the Samsung SSD T7 Shield, with a high endurance rating. For additional peace of mind, 256-bit AES hardware encryption will help prevent someone from accessing your data if you ever lose or misplace your external SSD. Some of the same features contribute to a great thumbstick drive. Our favorite picks for best budget external SSD models feature USB 3.0 connections and some form of hardware encryption. A note on console storage Seagate If PC gaming isn’t your thing and you own an Xbox Series X|S or PS5, outfitting your fancy new console with the fastest possible storage is far more straightforward than doing the same on PC. With a Series X or Series S, your options are limited to options from Seagate and Western Digital. The former offers 512GB, 1TB and 2TB models, with the most affordable starting at a not-so-trivial $90. Western Digital’s Expansion Cards are less expensive, with pricing starting at $80 for the 512GB model. The good news is that both options are frequently on sale. Your best bet is to set an alert for the model you want by using a price tracker like CamelCamelCamel. With Sony’s PlayStation 5, upgrading the console’s internal storage is slightly more involved. Instead of employing a proprietary solution, the PS5 uses NVMe storage. Thankfully, there aren’t as many potential configurations as you would find on a PC. Engadget maintains a comprehensive guide to the best SSDs for PS5; in short, your best bet is a high-capacity Gen4 drive with a built-in heatsink. Check out that guide for a full list of gaming SSD recommendations, but for a quick go-to, consider the Corsair MP600 Pro LPX I recommend above. It meets all the memory specifications for Sony’s latest console and you won’t run into any clearance issues with the heatsink. Corsair offers 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB versions of the drive. Expect to pay about $110 for the 1TB variant and about $200 for 2TB. For those still playing on a previous generation console, you can get slightly faster game load times from a PlayStation 4 by swapping the included hard drive to a 2.5-inch SSD, but going out of your way to do so probably isn’t worth it at this point and you’re better off saving your money for one of the new consoles and updating your operating system instead. SSD FAQs What size SSD is best? There is no one size fits all rule for SSDs, but we generally recommend getting at least a 1TB SSD if you’re looking to upgrade PC or game console storage, or looking to add an external drive to your toolkit. A 1TB drive will be plenty for most people who need extra storage space for photos, documents and programs. If you’re a hardcore gamer, you may want to invest in even more storage considering many high-profile titles today can take up a ton of space. Is a 256GB SSD better than a 1TB hard drive? The short answer is that it depends on what you need your drive for. In general, SSDs are faster and more efficient than HDDs, but HDDs are usually cheaper. We recommend springing for an SSD for most use cases today — upgrading a PC, saving important photos and documents, storing games long term, etc. But if you’re focused on getting the most amount of extra space possible (and sticking to a budget), an HDD could be a good option for you. Does bigger SSD mean faster? Getting a bigger SSD doesn’t always translate into a faster drive overall. A bigger SSD will provide a higher storage capacity, which means more space for storing digital files and programs. To understand how fast an SSD will be, you’ll want to look at its read/write speeds: read speeds measure how fast a drive can access information, while write speeds measure how fast the drive can save information. Most SSDs list their approximate read/write speeds in their specs, so be sure to check out those numbers before you make a purchase. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/computing/accessories/best-ssds-140014262.html?src=rss

Reduce child poverty with compassion and fairness | Letters

  • Readers respond to the archbishop of York’s call for an end to the two-child benefit capI read Archbishop Stephen Cottrell’s article with compassion, but also frustration (I have seen the extent of child poverty in the UK and I say this: the two-child benefit cap must go, 1 September) . As someone from the squeezed middle, I work hard, live modestly and make careful choices. We share one car, skip holidays and stretch every pound. I haven’t ruled out having another child – but the cost of living makes it feel increasingly out of reach.I agree no child should go hungry. But we must also ask: is it fair to expect taxpayers to subsidise larger families when many of us limit our own because we simply can’t afford more? If we remove all boundaries, where does that leave those of us who plan carefully and still struggle? Continue reading...

The collaboration will be on display at Yotta 2025, booth #316. COMPAL ELECTRONICS, INC. "Partnering with ZutaCore allows us to bring truly transformative cooling technology into our high-performance server portfolio," said Alan Chang, Vice President of the Infrastructure Solutions Business Unit, Compal. "The combination of our engineering expertise and ZutaCore's HyperCool® platform enables data centers to scale AI workloads more sustainably and cost-effectively." My D. Truong, ZutaCore CTO, said the partnership delivers the best of both technologies designed for AI's most demanding workloads—from hyperscale data centers to the edge. "With Edge AI accelerating faster than ever, cooling becomes a critical enabler of real-time intelligence,' he said. "Our waterless two-phase direct-to-chip cooling uses a non-conductive, non-corrosive dielectric fluid that instantly removes heat at the source, keeping processors cool even in the most constrained edge environments. Unlike water-based systems, it is 100% IT-safe—even in the unlikely event of a leak, it will not harm hardware. This breakthrough allows operators to deploy AI closer to where data is generated, while maximizing performance per rack, slashing energy costs, and advancing sustainability goals without compromising reliability." From Innovation to Implementation: Next-Generation Platforms At Yotta 2025, attendees will see two Compal platforms built with ZutaCore's HyperCool® waterless liquid cooling, proving how advanced cooling translates into real-world gains in density, efficiency, performance and reliability. SG720-2A-L2 (7U 8-GPU UBB)Designed for next-generation AI acceleration, this system features AMD InstinctTM MI325X GPUs and is ready for the upcoming MI355X. Its 850mm chassis delivers maximum flexibility: it fits seamlessly into today's EIA 19-inch racks—the universal rack size used in nearly every data center—while also supporting ORv3 (Open Rack Version 3) infrastructure, a new open standard from the Open Compute Project backed by Meta and Microsoft that enables hyperscale efficiency and sustainability. Supporting both ensures compatibility with today's environments and future-readiness for tomorrow's. A modular, tool-less design streamlines maintenance and upgrades, while liquid cooling integration enables an impressive PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) score as low as 1.04–1.1 SD221-8A-L2 (2U 4-Node Dual Processor)Built for high-density computing, this platform redefines efficiency with a 2U4N architecture and waterless two-phase cooling, achieving an industry-leading pPUE (partial Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.01. pPUE measures efficiency at the rack level, showing how little extra energy is needed beyond the servers themselves. Unlike water-based systems, ZutaCore's cooling uses a non-conductive, non-corrosive dielectric heat transfer fluid that is completely IT-safe, protecting hardware even in the event of a leak. This design minimizes risk, ensures reliability under heavy AI workloads, and combines sustainability with peace of mind. "PUE and pPUE are the industry's gold standards for energy efficiency," noted Truong. "A perfect score of 1.0 means every watt of power goes into computing, with none wasted on cooling. Reaching values this close to 1.0 is a breakthrough that redefines sustainable, high-performance data center operations." ZutaCore's Cooling Technology Brings Game-Changing Benefits ZutaCore's waterless, direct-to-chip liquid cooling, with its exclusive pool boiling technology, represents a fundamental shift from traditional air or single-phase liquid cooling. Instead of moving heat away gradually, it removes it instantly at the source by turning liquid into vapor, keeping processors consistently cool even under the most extreme workloads. For operators, the impact is immediate: Higher performance per rack — Run more AI and HPC workloads in the same footprint. Lower energy costs — Drive PUE and pPUE closer to the ideal of 1.0, cutting power bills dramatically. Greater reliability — Eliminate risks of condensation, corrosion, or hardware damage. Sustainability gains — Reduce both water and electricity use, accelerating ESG progress. When SSDs Vanishes: How Windows 11 Users Can Protect Data Security in a Crisis

  • NEW YORK, Sept. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Since the August 2025 release of Windows 11 update KB5063878, many users have started reporting serious issues online. Many have found that their previously healthy SSD/HDDs are not recognized on Windows 11 after the KB5063878 update. According to multiple reports, SSD models using the Phison NAND controller, including Corsair Force MP600, SanDisk Extreme Pro, and other SSDs/HDDs, may experience anomalies when the system attempts to transfer files larger than 50GB. This may cause the drive to vanish from Windows File Explorer and BIOS, with the partition showing as RAW. A RAW partition is one of the more alarming errors for everyday users. Instead of showing NTFS or exFAT, Windows suggests formatting the drive, or it cannot list your drive in the This PC tab. For those who click too quickly, the result is often total data loss. With BitLocker in the mix, the situation becomes even more delicate: the partition appears broken, yet files remain encrypted in the background, inaccessible without specialized handling. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and is still working on a fix. While a simple reboot has helped a few users, many drives remain undetected. With data security at stake, more people are turning to professional data recovery software for reassurance. So, in that case, how can users access essential data on the failed SSD? Experts from leading data security firms, EaseUS, have shared effective methods for recovering data, including from damaged or encrypted drives, offering hope for users facing sudden storage failures. EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, as a widely recognized data recovery tool, is capable of effectively handling such emergencies. This software enables the recovery of lost partitions, including BitLocker encrypted partitions, helping users retrieve important data when the system fails to recognize SSDs. Its deep scanning function can identify and recover various file types, and the user interface is simple and easy to use, suitable for all types of users. When Windows users encounter similar issues, EaseUS experts recommend that they first try restarting the system. If that doesn't resolve the issue, consider using a professional data recovery tool for safe recovery. OpenAI tech to be used to in a full-length animated film

  • OpenAI is throwing its resources behind a mostly AI-generated animated film that was the brainchild of one of the company's employees. As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, the film will be called Critterz and will follow forest creatures who go on an adventure after their village is disrupted by a stranger. Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI, started designing the characters three years ago with the intention of making a short film using OpenAI's DALL-E image-generation tool. The goal of the film is, in part, to show that animated films can be made for less money and in less time with AI. The team behind the film has set a budget of less than $30 million and a production schedule of only nine months. Both are a fraction of what it takes to produce a typical Hollywood animated picture. According to Nelson, OpenAI is hoping that if Critterz is successful, it might pave the way for adoption of more AI in the industry.London-based Vertigo Films will produce the film along with Native Foreign, a studio in Los Angeles that specializes in using AI alongside more traditional video production methods. Native Foreign previously produced a faux Planet Earth-style short film, also titled Critterz, written and directed by Nelson. It used DALL-E to create all the visuals for the short, which Native Foreign then brought to life with (limited) animation. The production team will hire human voice actors for the film's characters and will hire artists to draw sketches that will then be fed into OpenAI's chat and image-generating tools. The script for Critterz was penned by some of the same writers behind Paddington in Peru. The team aims to premiere the film at next year's Cannes Film Festival in May.Over the last few years, many Hollywood workers have fought to protect their livelihoods against AI encroachment. In 2023, after a protracted strike, SAG-AFTRA reached an agreement that would require "informed consent and compensation" should a studio wish to use AI-generated likenesses of any current or deceased SAG-AFTRA members. All of this comes against the backdrop of enormous lawsuits against AI companies by creatives and studios alike. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/openai-tech-to-be-used-to-in-a-full-length-animated-film-155921502.html?src=rss

Baseus Debuts PrimeTrip VD1 Pro, the Industry's First Dash Cam to Offer True Hardwire-Free Parking Monitoring

  • SHENZHEN, China, Sept. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Baseus today launched the PrimeTrip VD1 Pro Dashcam, the industry's first dash cam to provide up to 14 days of parking monitoring without an external hardwire kit, enabled by its Solar Sync System 2.0. With this launch, Baseus expands its smart-mobility portfolio with a purpose-built vehicle safety solution for drivers. The VD1 Pro removes traditional installation trade-offs — no hardwiring, no risk of draining the car battery — while delivering reliable on-road recording and practical daily features. It is also debuting at the IFA trade show in Germany — come experience it firsthand at the Baseus booth. True Hardwire-Free Parking Surveillance PrimeTrip VD1 Pro's Solar Sync System 2.0 combines a discreet, high-efficiency solar panel with an onboard lithium battery, allowing the unit to generate and manage its own power. This self-powered design makes external hardwiring unnecessary — simplifying installation and removing the risk of draining the vehicle battery — while sustaining up to 14 days of standby parking monitoring. When motion or impact is detected, the system automatically wakes and records simultaneous 30-second clips from both front and rear cameras, storing up to 20 incident events (a total of 40 clips) to ensure critical footage is preserved independently of the car's electrical system. Ultra-Clear 4K Front with Wide Dual-Channel Coverage PrimeTrip VD1 Pro simultaneously records the road ahead and behind, pairing a sharp 4K front channel with a wide 170° field of view (including ±15° horizontal adjustment) and a Full-HD rear channel covering 120°, providing comprehensive coverage around the vehicle. The front camera features Sony's IMX335 STARVIS sensor paired with an f/1.6 six-element glass lens, and real-time HDR processing to reduce noise and manage challenging lighting conditions, minimizing exposure fluctuations in environments such as tunnels or areas with mixed lighting. Seamless Smart Connectivity The PrimeTrip VD1 Pro pairs with the Baseus mobile app to keep control and management within easy reach. Through the app, recording resolution can be adjusted before a night drive for optimal clarity, and after a trip, important clips can be quickly reviewed and downloaded at high speed over Wi-Fi 6 (5 GHz). The app also enables effortless OTA firmware updates, ensuring the dash cam stays up to date. The PrimeTrip VD1 Pro is more than a new product for Baseus: it sets an industry precedent by removing the need for hardwiring in parking surveillance. By combining practical installation, energy efficiency and professional-grade recording, VD1 Pro raises the baseline for what drivers should expect from dash cams and signals a shift toward more user-friendly, self-sustaining vehicle security solutions. Price and Availability The Baseus PrimeTrip VD1 Pro Dashcam Front 4K + Rear 1080P is now available on Amazon U.S. and Baseus.com at an MSRP of $169.99. This pettable Poke? Ball is a Tamagotchi-style toy with over 150 Poke?mon inside and I need it now

  • Japanese toymaker Takara Tomy is releasing a Poke? Ball virtual pet toy so you can fulfill your dreams of carrying your favorite Poke?mon around with you everywhere. I don't know how this one slid under my radar when it was announced at the end of August (perhaps because all my attention has been on Tamagotchi Paradise) but now that I've seen it, I must have it. While it appears to be a Japan-only release, the product page shows it will have an English language option in the menu. Pre-orders are open (though currently sold out on Amazon Japan), and the device will ship on October 11, according to Essential Japan. The toy costs ¥7,480 or about $51 — but I shudder to think how much that number will jump with tariffs factored in. Per the listing, there are seven partner Poke?mon you can care for: Pikachu, Eevee, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly, Lucario and Sylveon. And if you pet the device, they'll react. There are also 150 other Poke?mon to interact with, though it's unclear what the extent of those interactions will be beyond battles (and... washing?). Regardless, l hope Wooper is one of them. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/this-pettable-poke-ball-is-a-tamagotchi-style-toy-with-over-150-pokemon-inside-and-i-need-it-now-215047740.html?src=rss

Graphene enhanced perovskite solar cells improve efficiency and reduce production costs

  • Highlights Addition of graphene to perovskite solar cells (PSC) shown to improve efficiency two-fold and reduce production costs by up to 80% Cost-effective production allows scale up of volume and increases product competitiveness Partnership with Halocell and QUT helping deliver upward trend in commercial sales of ultra low-cost perovskite solar cells since launch to market last year More than 40 device categories identified to benefit from PSC application with significant market growth opportunities SYDNEY, Sept. 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- First Graphene Limited (ASX: FGR; "First Graphene" or "the Company") (FRA:M11) (OTCQB:FGPHF) is pleased to provide an update on its partnership with Halocell Energy (Halocell) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to develop graphene enhanced perovskite solar cells (PSC). PSC Material Layers Through the addition of First Graphene's novel functionalised graphene, Halocell's photovoltaic (PV) PSC has almost doubled in efficiency to 30.6%, while reducing production costs by up to 80%. This is predominantly achieved through the Company's graphene formulations being compatible with roll-to-roll (R2R) dispersion technology, which eliminates traditional high conductor and high-cost materials such as gold and silver from PSCs (see Figure 1). R2R is the cheapest PSC manufacture method, providing a rapidly scalable production technique, introducing cost and volume efficiencies that gives Halocell's cells market advantage against competitors. Cells made with alternative carbon-based materials such as graphene (see Figure 2) have widely been found to outperform conventional silicon cells in low and artificial light conditions, including indoor environments, generating and supplying power for niche applications. Perovskites generally lower PV material, processing and energy costs associated with manufacture significantly compared to traditional silicon-based PVs. Their energy payback period has been calculated to be as low as six weeks compared to silicon cells which take approximately two years. Technology development and performance has created a level of PSC efficiency in the last decade that took 40 years to achieve in silicon-based cells. Research partnership leading to commercial opportunities FGR's research and development partnership with Halocell and QUT started in 2023 and continues to be funded through a three-year AU$2.03 million grant from the Federal Government's Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRC-P). To assist ongoing development of graphene-enhanced PSCs, First Graphene entered a two-year commercial agreement to supply Halocell with its PureGRAPH® for use as a high performing coating in their cells last year (refer ASX announcement 26 September 2024). Since late 2024 Halocell has been selling indoor, low-light PSCs to the Australian market, typically used in small electronic items. PSCs are widely considered the best solution to replace hundreds of millions of batteries used in small everyday electronic devices such as TV remotes, calculators, toys, lights and torches, e-readers and tracking devices. They can also be applied to high-end devices such as satellite solar modules, fixed wing drones, shark detectors, biomedical sensors and weather stations. Halocell has identified 44 devices used across the IoT, electronics, space, aviation and full sun sectors that its PSC technology could be applied to. Halocell is in the process of planning and seeking capital to expand its Wagga Wagga plant capacity through modular expansion of R2R production lines and boosting operating capability, with a view to eventually manufacturing up to 60 million PSC units annually. First Graphene Managing Director and CEO Michael Bell said: "We're pleased with the progress Halocell has made applying our PureGRAPH® to its perovskite solar cell development, not only through our R&D collaboration but now in a commercial setting. Halocell's ambient module product line has been commercially available since September last year, meaning our partnership is generating competitive Australian innovation with global reach. Production of these cells fits with our decarbonisation mantra when applying graphene to materials, which is proven to improve product performance, extend life and dramatically lower production costs to create a highly competitive product available to market." Halocell Energy CEO Paul Moonie said: "Our approach to perovskite commercialisation has always been strong material science while keeping cost and processability in mind. This collaboration project with First Graphene has delivered that, and we now have a suite of low-cost materials we can select for a range of PV applications we will deliver. In addition to improving the performance of our products, this locks in bespoke material from First Graphene as a secure and reliable supplier. This material will be included in sales of our Ambient PV range already available for purchase as well as our drone and satellite PV modules. I thank the Federal Government's Collaborative Research Centre program for its support, this not only adds value to our products, but also strengthens sovereign manufacturing in Australia."

Inside Trump’s crypto empire

Inside Trump’s crypto empire

  • Cryptocurrency is a true mystery to most. Terms like blockchain, decentralised finance (DeFi) and mining are alien to them. Meanwhile, with the absence of any regulating body, crypto has become the first choice of those involved in illegal acts, including terrorism. Now, it has also suddenly come to play a role in international diplomacy, acting both as a tool for economic innovation and a potential weapon in geopolitical strategies.US President Donald Trump, who used to be staunchly opposed to crypto, is now its strongest advocate. The shift started when Trump campaigned for presidency in 2024, having accepted donations worth $7.5 million in cryptocurrency. Since he took oath for the second time, he has launched ventures for crypto trade, drafted procrypto policy initiatives and forced international diplomacy through digital assets. He has integrated crypto into the US financial system and created a crypto reserve, even as he disbanded a team working on crypto crimes.Trump’s role in cryptocurrency is multifaceted: he is a high-profile investor, policy reformer and diplomatic influencer and his shift from critic to champion sparks serious ethical and security concerns.Over the past few months, US companies connected with Trump signed multiple deals with government-sponsored organisations of various countries for crypto. The process is presently moving at an exceptional pace. The interplay of personal profit and policy raises major red flags and has a huge impact on international relations.RISE OF WLFThe one thing common to the deals backed by Trump is World Liberty Financial (WLF). It is a DeFi platform —a blockchain-based system offering financial services—headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. It is a bank performing everything a bank does, except that it is all in crypto. The Trump family formed WLF in September 2024 after Donald Trump got through the Republican primaries and won sympathy after an assassination attempt on him. WLF launched its $WLFI token, which was bought in bulk by the Trump family, at the time. After becoming president, Trump launched two types of memecoin, one in his own name and another in his wife’s name, terming them $TRUMP and $MELANIA.These memecoins, without anything intrinsic backing it, gain value from trading, hype, social media, or celebrity association rather than practical use cases.Today there are plans to list WLF on Nasdaq.Ever since Trump became POTUS, multiple deals were signed with various countries, which not only benefitted WLF, but skyrocketed the price of his own portfolio. For example, in March 2025, WLF sent a letter of intent to Pakistan for inclusion of crypto in its financial institutions and signed a formal agreement on April 26. In the following two months Pakistan created a regulatory framework and started trading in crypto with WLF.Meanwhile, in UAE, Trump’s stablecoin was used by state-owned MGX in its $2 billion investment in crypto exchange Binance, while another fund based in that country bought $100 million worth of WLFI tokens. In May, GD Culture Group, a company with close ties to the Chinese government, invested $300 million in $TRUMP. In April, Fr8Tech, a Mexico-based tech firm, invested $20 million in $TRUMP memecoin.Trump organisations like CIC Digital and Fight Fight Fight control the $TRUMP memecoin, while Melania-owned MKT World controls the sale of $MELANIA. Since their launch, over 50 large investors, including Oddiyana Ventures, Web3Port, DWF Labs and Aqua1 Foundation, from across the world, invested in WLF.In August, ALT5 Sigma Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed fintech and digital asset treasury company, finalised a $1.5 billion deal with WLF, and acquired 7.5% of WLF’s tokens. This deal has given a significant boost to the market price of WLFI token. These are just a few examples, and there could be other governments and private organisations which might have invested heavily in Trump’s crypto businesses.OTHER SIDE OF THE COINIt is extremely difficult to speculate the net worth of Trump on crypto platforms, and different estimates have been floating about. The New York Times pegged it at $7.1 billion in July, Bloomberg limited it to $620 million in the same month. Others like Forbes gave an estimate of $3.3 billion, while Accountable.US estimated it at over $11 billion.A major reason for the wild variance is that the total count of WLFI tokens or $TRUMP and $MELANIA memecoins is not available. How many are in the market and how many are still locked are a mystery. However, one thing is clear—nearly all this worth of crypto has been obtained by Trump and his family after he became the 47th president of the United States.Soon after Trump became president, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dropped probe into Coinbase, a crypto trading organisation headed by Brian Armstrong. The company was accused of marketing unregistered securities. After investigations were dropped without any penalty, Armstrong went into an agreement with WLF and listed $TRUMP and $MELANIA for sale on its platform, giving them more visibility.Similarly, a major fraud case against Justin Sun, founder of Tron cryptocurrency, was rolled back. He promptly invested $75 million in WLF in February.Others on the list of beneficiaries include Ripple Labs, Binance, Horizen Labs, Cumberland, Immutable, Crypto.com, Gemini, OpenSea, Uniswap Labs, ConsenSys, Robinhood, PayPal and CyberKongz.Trump’s policies (such as dismissal of lawsuits by SEC, and the GENIUS Act) align with his financial interests, while his deregulation approach may harm the US in several ways. These actions may weaken antimoney laundering measures, enabling terrorist groups or non-state actors to exploit US-based platforms, and it may create a different and parallel financial system for illicit activities in US and beyond. INDIA’S MOVESThrough their involvement in WLF, foreign entities may try to gain influence in US policy. Trump, through these dealings, is creating new geopolitical and diplomatic flashpoints, the signs of which are visible now.India has to be cautious, as Pakistan is deeply involved with WLF and America in crypto.Given its record of terror financing and grey listing at the Financial Action Task Force, Pakistan will be using crypto channels to fund, finance and empower its terrorist network, something that can cause serious challenges for India. At the same time, against the backdrop of the ongoing tariff war and strained relationship with India, US may try to project Pakistan as a crypto hub for South Asia, hampering India’s economic interests. The hope is that India’s balanced and cautious approach may help attract crypto investors and reduce its reliance on the dollar further.(Views are personal)

A New Era in Smart Living: ECOVACS Unveils DEEBOT X11 with PowerBoost Technology and Expands Service Robot Portfolio at IFA 2025

  • ECOVACS is introducing its groundbreaking robotic vacuum cleaner DEEBOT X11 at IFA 2025, taking innovation to new heights and ushering in a new era of perpetual runtime. The brand is also expanding into new service robot scenarios with its revolutionary robotic pool cleaner, ULTRAMARINE, reinforcing its leadership in the multi-category home service robotics sector. BERLIN, Sept. 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- ECOVACS, a global leader in service robotics, unveiled its latest innovations at IFA, setting the stage for a new era in intelligent living. David Cheng Qian, Vice Chairman of ECOVACS Group and CEO of ECOVACS ROBOTICS, presented the company's newest breakthroughs in multi-scenario cleaning. Headlining the showcase was the groundbreaking DEEBOT X11 — the world's first robotic vacuum cleaner equipped with PowerBoost Technology for perpetual runtime — underscoring ECOVACS' bold step into the future of intelligent home cleaning. Alongside this flagship launch, ECOVACS also made a strategic leap into new household scenarios with the introduction of a brand-new robot category – the robotic pool cleaner – ECOVACS ULTRAMARINE. ECOVACS’ Booth at IFA 2025 "Driven by our mission of 'Robotics for All,' we continue to launch technologies and products that genuinely improve people's lives," said David Cheng Qian. "From DEEBOT to a wider range of home scenarios, every innovation is grounded in real consumer needs. We believe that future smart homes should deliver proactive services, with 'invisible' technology. Building on the foundation of our robust supply chain, we will continue to advance technological innovations to ensure that 'What Only ECOVACS Can Do' translates into real, lasting value for our customers." The DEEBOT X11: Ushering in A New Era of PowerBoost At this year's IFA, ECOVACS unveiled the DEEBOT X11, the first robotic vacuum cleaner with PowerBoost Technology, delivering the most powerful cleaning performance in the company's history. DEEBOT X11 Family, The First Robotic Vacuum Cleaner with PowerBoost Technology PowerBoost Technology redefines intelligent charging for robotic vacuum cleaners. Leveraging fragmented recharging and intelligent power scheduling, it can restore 6% of battery power in just three minutes during routine mop-cleaning pauses. This enables flexible, continuous, and consistent operation, with truly uninterrupted coverage of up to 1,000 m2 in a single session. This breakthrough in instant charging not only challenges the traditional industry equation of "runtime equals battery capacity" but also ushers in a new era of perpetual runtime in smart home cleaning. The upgraded OZMO ROLLER 2.0 technology with TruEdge 3.0 further elevates the X11's precision and cleaning power. Its enhanced high-density-nylon mop roller, combined with 3,800Pa of mopping pressure at 200 rpm, effortlessly tackles even the toughest stains, leaving surfaces streak-free without residual dirty water trails or damage. TruEdge 3.0 Extreme Edge Cleaning Technology delivers full edge and corner coverage with its 1.5cm extended reach. Since debuting on the X8, OZMO ROLLER technology has redefined deep cleaning and is global acclaimed with nearly 1.5 million units sold worldwide. Another breakthrough is ECOVACS' first OmniCyclone Station, which integrates PureCyclone 2.0 Auto-Empty Technology directly into the OMNI Station – an industry first. This "bagless revolution" eliminates the need for disposable dust bags, saving up to 2 million dust bags annually[1]. The design not only reduces costs for users but also makes everyday cleaning more efficient and sustainable. The DEEBOT X11 also debuts AGENT YIKO, a fully autonomous home manager and the industry's first deep integration of a traditional voice assistant with a deep-thinking large language model. Moving beyond basic voice controls, AGENT YIKO proactively thinks and plans, performing a multi-step analysis of spatial data and user preferences to deliver genuinely autonomous and intelligent cleaning. Scenario Expansion Backed by Sustained Innovation Alongside this groundbreaking launch, DEEBOT continues to lead the market with unmatched scale and recognition. It has been No. 1 in market share in China's robotic vacuum cleaner market for 10 consecutive years. Beyond technological innovation, DEEBOT has also joined the Matter ecosystem and earned "Diamond" Level loT Security Verification from UL Solutions, delivering smoother cross-platform connectivity while ensuring robust data protection. Building on this foundation, ECOVACS recently announced a strategic partnership with BSH to launch the world's first built-in vacuum and mopping robot, co-developed by BSH and powered by ECOVACS technologies. By combining the expertise of both companies, this partnership aims to deliver innovative, intelligent floor cleaning solutions and establish a pioneering new category within the service robotics industry. Further reinforcing its technological leadership and expansion into new service robotics categories, ECOVACS leveraged its multi-category expertise to unveil its first robotic pool cleaner, ULTRAMARINE, at this year's IFA. Robotic pool cleaners have increasingly become a must-have for consumers' pool maintenance. As a global leader in intelligent service robotics, ECOVACS has conducted in-depth consumer research to identify significant opportunities to improve cleaning performance, ease of use, and intelligence in existing products for users. Equipped with multiple rolling brushes, powerful suction, and diverse cleaning modes, the ULTRAMARINE integrates ECOVACS' most advanced positioning, obstacle avoidance, and navigation algorithms. This launch strengthens ECOVACS' outdoor robotics portfolio and marks a key milestone in its journey toward a full-category service robotics lineup, reinforcing its commitment to delivering intelligent solutions for every household scenario. ECOVACS is gaining momentum worldwide across several categories. Since its debut, WINBOT, the robotic window cleaner pioneered by ECOVACS, has not only opened an entirely new category but also reshaped consumer expectations for window cleaning. In 2024, WINBOT sales exceeded USD 100 million, driven by strong demand in both China and Europe. At IFA, ECOVACS is showcasing the WINBOT W2S and W2S OMNI. Both feature TruEdge Technology and advanced WIN-SLAM 4.0 intelligent path planning for significantly enhanced cleaning performance. And both models will be officially launched following IFA. Also on display is the WINBOT MINI, already available, which combines an ultra-thin design with powerful cleaning performance for more flexible and efficient window cleaning. Warner Bros. Discovery is suing Midjourney for copyright infringement

  • Warner Bros. Discovery has filed a lawsuit against popular AI image generator Midjourney, accusing it of stealing and exploiting its intellectual properties. The complaint revolves around the AI tool's ability to generate images and videos of Warner Bros.' popular fictional characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny and his friends from Looney Tunes. "Midjourney thinks it is above the law," the company wrote in its lawsuit. It said that the image generator sells a commercial subscription service powered by AI technology that was illegally trained using its copyrighted works. The company argued that Midjourney has the technology to prevent users from generating images of the characters it owns. It apparently refused to generate videos based on Warner Bros.' properties when it first launched its video model. But within the past couple of weeks, it allegedly removed those protections and told its users that they would encounter "fewer blocked jobs." The ability to generate Warner Bros.' characters are a clear draw for its subscription service that costs $10 to $120 a month, the media conglomerate said. "It is hard to imagine copyright infringement that is any more willful than what Midjourney is doing here," the plaintiff added. "Midjourney has prioritized and sought to preserve the hundreds of millions of dollars it earns annually from its service by doubling down on its theft of copyrighted works."In the complaint, the company gave several examples of Midjourney-generated images and video stills next to images and screencaps of its movies and shows. The image above, for instance, shows Midjourney's output from the prompt "Batman, screencap from The Dark Knight." next to actual promotional materials from the Christian Bale-led movie. Further, generic prompts like "classic comic book superhero battle" could lead to output with WB characters even if they're not specifically mentioned. Midjourney is already facing a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Disney and Universal Studios back in June. They accused the AI service of "help[ing] itself to countless" copyrighted works to train its models and for infringing on their copyright by allowing users to generate images of characters from Star Wars, Shrek, The Simpsons and Despicable Me, among other properties. Warner Bros. Discovery is now asking the court for statutory damages of "up to $150,000 per infringed work by virtue of Midjourney’s willful infringement." We've reached out to Midjourney and will update this post when we hear back. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/warner-bros-discovery-is-suing-midjourney-for-copyright-infringement-035850831.html?src=rss

Opposition BJD slams Odisha Govt over delay in Anwesha fund, SC/ST Atrocities Act Amendment

  • Bhubaneswar: The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today accused the BJP Government in Odisha of neglecting the upliftment of SC and ST communities, targeting it over delays in the Anwesha scheme and amendments to investigation norms under the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.At a press conference held at Shankha Bhawan, BJD Chief Whip and MLA Pramila Mallick alleged despite the academic year 2024–25 beginning five months ago, no grants have been released under the Anwesha scheme, which supports tribal students with school fees, uniforms, books, hostel facilities, and healthcare. She claimed the State Government was deliberately trying to shut down the scheme, terming it “deeply unfortunate.”The Anwesha scheme was launched in 2015–16 by then Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Mallick further alleged this year, leftover funds were withdrawn, creating a crisis in hostels, forcing many students to drop out. Quoting the UDISE report, she said the dropout rate at the secondary level has risen to 9.8%.Former Minister and BJD Vice President Sudam Marndi criticised the government for amending norms under the SC & ST Atrocities Act. Until recently, only DSP-rank officers were authorised to investigate such cases. However, through a notification issued on August 30, 2025, Inspectors and Sub-Inspectors have now been empowered to investigate.Marndi described the move as a “calculated attack” on the rights of SC/ST communities, who constitute around 40% of Odisha’s population, and demanded immediate withdrawal of the order, warning of statewide protests otherwise.BJD Media Coordinator Priyabrata Majhi pointed out Rule 7 of the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995, framed under Section 23(1) of the 1989 Act, clearly mandates only DSP-rank officers can investigate such cases. He argued the Odisha Government lacks the authority to override rules formulated by the Centre and approved by Parliament.“If the State had delegated powers to officers senior to DSP, it would have been legally sound. But by downgrading investigation to lower-ranking officers, the government is denying justice to SC and ST victims of atrocities,” Majhi said.

ravichandran-ashwin-to-play-in-australias-big-bash-league-he-might-play-for-this-team

  • Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL), is on the cross-hairs of several cricket leagues around the world. The 38-year-old had expressed a wish to "explore the game around various leagues". No longer under contract with the BCCI, Ashwin has been contacted by two overseas leagues already - The Hundred and the ILT20. And now, he is reportedly in talks with Cricket Australia to play in the Big Bash League (BBL). According to Cricbuzz, Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg contacted Ashwin shortly after his IPL retirement. He confirmed the ongoing discussions snf called securing “champion cricketer" Ashwin a "great" outcome on many levels. Ashwin would significantly benefit the Big Bash and would also boost Australia's summer cricket season, Greenberg added. The details of the discussion are yet to be known, but Ashwin's availability for matches is crucial. Also, all eight BBL teams have mostly spent their salary budgets. Reports suggest that if the deal is finalised, Melbourne is likely to be Ashwin’s new cricketing home. He will also become the first Indian male cricketer to play in the BBL. Ashwin was earlier linked to the ILT20. "Yes, I am in talks with the organisers. Hopefully, I will have a buyer if I register for the auction," Ashwin was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. However, while Season 4 of ILT20 is scheduled for December 2, 2025, to January 4, 2026, the BBL runs from December 14, 2026, to January 25, 2026. So, he will have to make a choice. The ILT20 auction is scheduled to take place on September 30 in Dubai and registration will be completed by September 10. This is the first time that ILT20 will have an auction as it followed the Draft System to pick players during earlier seasons. Ashwin is India's second-highest wicket-taker across formats with 765 wickets in 287 international games.

best-exercise-to-fight-insomnia

  • New research published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine suggests that yoga, Tai Chi, walking and jogging may be the most effective forms of exercise for improving sleep quality and easing symptoms of insomnia. Insomnia affects about 22 per cent of adults and is associated with an increased risk of numerous mental and physical health conditions, including dementia and cardiovascular disease.Drug treatments for insomnia often come with side effects, while cognitive behavioural therapy, though effective, is not always accessible due to a lack of trained therapists. To explore alternative solutions, researchers analysed 22 randomised clinical trials involving 1,348 participants and 13 different treatment strategies for insomnia. Seven of these were exercise-based interventions: yoga, Tai Chi, walking or jogging, combined aerobic and strength training, strength training alone, aerobic exercise combined with therapy and mixed aerobic routines.Yoga emerged as one of the most effective options—significantly increasing total sleep time by nearly two hours and improving sleep efficiency by around 15 per cent. It also reduced the time spent awake after sleep onset by almost an hour and shortened sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) by nearly 30 minutes.Walking or jogging also showed strong benefits, reducing insomnia severity by nearly 10 points. Tai Chi practitioners saw notable improvements as well—sleeping an average of 52 minutes longer, lowering poor sleep quality scores by over four points, reducing time awake after falling asleep by more than 30 minutes and shortening sleep latency by about 25 minutes. Further analysis revealed that Tai Chi consistently outperformed existing treatments across both subjective and objective sleep measures, with sustained benefits lasting up to two years.“The findings of this study further underscore the therapeutic potential of exercise interventions in the treatment of insomnia, suggesting that their role may extend beyond adjunctive support to serve as viable primary treatment options,” the study concluded.

"All Systems Go": Fleet Space & Australia's F1 Phenom Joanne Ciconte Announce Brand Partnership

  • ADELAIDE, Australia, Sept. 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Fleet Space Technologies, Australia's leading space exploration company, and Australia's F1 Academy phenom, Joanne Ciconte, announced a brand partnership to elevate Australian women fearlessly driving innovation in high-performance STEM fields. Connecting two of Australia's leading pioneers in space exploration and motorsports, this partnership aims to highlight the rise of women leaders in high-performance STEM fields and how real-time data is fueling rapid advances in aerospace, exploration, and motorsport technology. jwplayer.key="3Fznr2BGJZtpwZmA+81lm048ks6+0NjLXyDdsO2YkfE=" “All Systems Go”: Fleet Space & Australia’s F1 Phenom Joanne Ciconte Announce Brand Partnership jwplayer('myplayer1').setup({file: 'https://mma.prnasia.com/media2/2762893/Fleet_Space_F1_Academy_Joanne.mp4', image: 'https://mma.prnasia.com/media2/2762893/Fleet_Space_F1_Academy_Joanne.mp4?p=thumbnail', autostart:'false', stretching : 'uniform', width: '512', height: '288'}); "This partnership with Fleet Space is incredibly exciting because it brings together two worlds I'm passionate about - pushing the limits of technology and breaking new ground for women in applied STEM fields," said F1 Academy driver, Joanne Ciconte. "Fleet Space's historic contributions to Australia's space heritage and relentless innovation in space technology reflects my drive to become Australia's first female F1 driver; fueled by a passion for speed, precision, and exploration. Together, we're showing what's possible when you challenge boundaries and open new paths for the next generation." From winning Australian Karting Championship Pink Plate to becoming the youngest driver on the 2025 F1 Academy grid after a single-seater debut season in Europe - Joanne's journey to become one of the 18 fastest women on the planet is unlike any other in motorsports. Her bold embrace of the new single-seater technology and data-driven learning has been a key accelerator for Joanne's growth - delivering her first points at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia in April. Co-Founder & CEO of Fleet Space, Flavia Tata Nardini, uniquely relates to Joanne's meteoric rise in the F1 world. An Italian aerospace engineer who worked on propulsion systems at the European Space Agency, Flavia founded Fleet Space and led the development of Australia's first constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. Beginning as a dream born while building satellites in the garage with Co-Founder & Chief Exploration Officer, Matt Pearson, Fleet Space has grown to Australia's most valuable space exploration company (A$800M), recently unveiled its new 5300m2+ global headquarters and advanced manufacturing facility, and plans to send the first Australian-made technology to the Moon on Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 2. Fueling this growth are the same principles and systems engineers use in F1, aerospace, technology, and more to unlock new frontiers of performance: continuous learning loops with real-time data. These systems have driven world-changing breakthroughs in reusable rockets, self-driving vehicles, and F1's ascension to the pinnacle of motorsports. Using space technology and agile geoscience solutions, Fleet Space built the world's first system for global mining and resources companies to fuel faster, smarter, and cleaner mineral discovery with real-time data - making the cutting-edge methods of data-driven performance in F1 and aerospace practical in essential industries for Earth's clean energy future. "Joanne's journey and F1's rise as a data-driven sport mirrors the spirit that fuels us at Fleet Space - a fearless commitment to speed, precision, and learning as we unlock new frontiers of exploration on Earth, the Moon, and Mars. Breaking boundaries requires the same boldness to embrace risk, master cutting-edge technology, and create possibilities for others that didn't exist before. As Fleet Space approaches its 10 year anniversary, we believe there is no limit to where curiosity, courage, and relentless drive can take the next generation - whether that's the racetrack, low Earth orbit, or kilometres below our feet. Supporting world-class talent like Joanne as she rises to the pinnacle of her field is at the core of who we are: explorers." "The support from Fleet Space will open new doors for opportunity, access to additional physical and mental development along with more seat time - which is pivotal for any driver who wants to excel in racing," Joanne said. Starting in 2026, Joanne will debut a custom-made Fleet Space helmet with the company's branding on the race suit, and gloves. To learn more about Joanne and Flavia's mindset, learnings, and experience breaking boundaries in high-performance STEM fields where women are traditionally underrepresented, check out their conversation on Fleet Space's Beyond Discovery podcast series - available to watch or listen here. Modi At SCO Summit: Strongest Call Yet For Zero Tolerance On Terror

  • At the SCO Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made India’s stance loud and clear—terrorism is the gravest threat to peace and stability. Thanking global partners for their support after the Pahalgam terror attack, Modi demanded zero tolerance to cross-border terror. He called for an SCO-wide framework to cut terror financing, curb radicalisation, and counter new-age threats like cyber and drone terrorism. His powerful words came in the presence of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, making the message even sharper. The joint declaration carried India’s stamp—condemning the Pahalgam attack and calling for action against terror sponsors. A major contrast from June when India refused to sign the Defence Ministers’ statement. This time, India’s anti-terror message was unmissable.

Modi’s Tough Stand At SCO: Pahalgam Attack Named In Joint Declaration

  • At the SCO summit in Tianjin, India scored a major diplomatic win by ensuring the Pahalgam terror attacks were included in the joint declaration—after they were earlier rejected at the defence ministers’ meet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack as “an assault on humanity” and called for united global action against cross-border terrorism. While India highlighted Operation Sindoor and its precision strikes on terror hubs, the declaration also condemned terror incidents in Pakistan, reflecting China’s balancing act. PM Modi’s cold shoulder to Pakistan’s PM Sharif, contrasted with his warm interactions with Xi and Putin, stood out. This SCO summit comes amid strained India-US ties, with tariffs doubling and India’s Russia energy trade under global scrutiny.

New Launches From Vinfast, Mahindra, Maruti And Volvo As Automakers Gear Up For Festive Season

  • This month is full of new EV launches as brands gear up to woo new buyers with their latest cars. However, there is a clear theme of EVs as electric mobility has moved to various segments but majorly is in the premium SUV space. Maruti Suzuki for example will not launch an EV on the 3rd but instead will bring its Victoris SUV which would come with a hybrid powertrain. The Victoris will be sold via Arena dealerships and will expand the SUV share even more. It will most likely come with mild and strong Hybrid options from the Grand Vitara. The next one would be a new brand altogether and an EV one at that. Vietnamese car manufacturer Vinfast will debut in India with the VF6 and VF7 which are born electric SUVs. Both of them would compete at the heart of the SUV space at two distinct price points. The VF6 and VF7 are uniquely designed SUVs which are spacious as well. The VF7 would come with a dual motor option as well. The other new EV would be from Volvo with the EX30. Volvo attempts to get a new wave of younger customers with the smaller EX30. The EX30 would be slotted below the EX40 while coming with a quirky as well as futuristic design. Lastly Mahindra will also bring in its facelifted Thar 3-door which will get a new look as well as new features from Thar Roxx. The engine options will stay the same with the 3 door Thar and it will be mostly cosmetic only.
